week 2 - learning journal

1.     One New thing that you learnt from any of your HELP classes.
(For example, did you learn any new strategies? New phrases? Use them here and reflect on what you have learnt.)

I thought I learned same thing when I seat and listen the lecture. So I always wonder about my skill which I have learned from January to now. I learned the most about TOEFL at HELP, actually I didn’t like to learn TOEFL because I won’t apply to somewhere America university. But that time I was thinking like when I learn TOEFL it will be helpful because TOEIC is easier than TOEFL. But after when I took a TOEIC test, I thought the most helpful lecture is private tutoring. I know from January to now, i have learned many thing and i reflected my score. Nevertheless my tutoring was focusing on my test, and tutor also prepared all stuff for me. I am super week on listening part more than any others. despite reading also terrible , I don’t have time to prepare reading, we did focus on listening. The result was satisfying for me. it was not enough time but we did concentrate and got it. I know I have to study hard in class also. so I will try hard to catch whatever teacher gives us.

2. One New thing that you learnt from outside of HELP classes.
(For example, did you learn any new things about Hawaii? Did you learn any thing new from the Halloween fest? Did you learn any thing new from talking to your friends or anyone?)

To join Halloween in USA, it was really interesting and useful experience to me. Before I was in Korea, one of my wishes is spending time on Halloween and Christmas in warm country. One of my wishes, Halloween, came true. Especially the things which I liked the most are hung with my friends. Before we participated to join Waikiki festival, we met Chris’s house and prepared our costumes. Each other helped to make up scarier than normal life and spread fake blood. Also I had no Idea about the Halloween, I was researching the origin of Halloween. Briefly, Halloween was originated from the festival of exorcism. Old people believed after harvesting grain, devil will come to real world and steal their food which they harvested. Besides they are afraid to be bothered by devil.so they prepared food for devil, when devil visit their house and treat them nicely. So time passed, this kinds of story originate the Halloween when we wear ghost or devil costumes and visit neighbor house to do “trick or treating” game. I really recommend to others about both of aspects. Other countries history of holiday is really interesting and easy to access when I felt directly(join their festival) and searched information.

3. Are there any reading strategies in reading in your L1(first language)? (For this question, just write as much as you can. It does not have to be 200 words.)
In Korea, I can only think one way about the reading which we need to take test to enter the university. Actually we(high school student) needed “skill”. One is speed, two is accuracy. When you read and move?.we have time limit. We didn’t have time to enjoy the reading.

4. Do you have any questions about creating GOs so far? Anything you would like to know at this point?
From now, we just memorized concept of the conjunction. I want to know when I can use this concept, so I would like to do more activity with peers. I thought GO is more related to reading but until now I wonder it is really relate to reading. Because my reading teacher and I also think my most week part is reading. In reading class, I spend a lot of my time on improving my reading faster first. Also my question is that “creating GO” sound like writing but I can imagine how can we use GO concept to write something. Actually I am not visual learner, so I was worrying when I join this class. But before we did in spring term, I think I can do it right. First week also difficult to understand everything also second week, I had too much curious. Because my reading ability had never improved before, this curious is kind of suspection about my skill.

  1. Rebecca,
I like how you are thinking about how much you have improved since spring. It is VERY important for all of us to reflect on learning, and this is why we are doing this journal. It is true that when you do tutoring, the instructor's focus is only on you so you can improve more. There are different values to everything.

I think it is very important that you find connections between tests and general English skills. It is also your teachers' job to help you relate what they are doing to test preparation as well as your daily life. However, if you are diligent enough, you should have thought about all these things already. If you don't understand some of the content that you are learning in classes, like I said, challenge your teachers to explain why you are doing certain things. Being able to raise critical questions is an advance skill to have in learning. Thinking skills should have high value in learning.

This week (week 3) we will start creating GOs for the first time and you will see models from me first, and then gradually you will take over and create your own. I will show everyone how this is related to reading more than any other fields. I wanted all of you to think about what we have been doing in class that's why I had this question. I think it is important to reflect at any stage of learning. I will show you soon how GOs are applied in enhancing reading comprehension. Meanwhile, I will provide a research paper about the effectiveness of GOs. Stay tuned! :)

(When you write, because of "prepositions" and make sure you have subject in a sentence.)
